Herrick (1854-1929) served one term as governor, from 1904 to 1906, before accepting a position as the ambassador to France. His gubernatorial administration was fraught by divisions, difficulties, and disagreements within the Republican party as well as discontent from varying community interests that made it difficult for Herrick to avoid criticism.
