Ohio Governors' State of the State Addresses
Description: Governor Thomas Worthington delivered an annual message to the General Assembly of Ohio on Dec. 7, 1818. These 11 pages are excerpted from the 1818/1819 Senate Journal. Worthington (1773-1827), a Democratic-Republican, served as Ohio’s sixth governor from 1814 to 1818. Upon election, his primary concern was the War of 1812, which he strongly supported. When the war ended, Worthington worked to strengthen Ohio’s military and elementary education systems as well as encouraged the state regulation of banks. In addition, at the beginning of his second term, Worthington moved the state capital from Chillicothe to Columbus. View on Ohio Memory.
