Ohio Governors' State of the State Addresses
Description: Governor Samuel Huntington delivered an annual message to the General Assembly of Ohio on Dec. 6, 1809. These six pages are excerpted from the 1809/1810 Senate Journal. Huntington, a Democratic-Republican, served as Ohio’s third governor from 1808 to 1810. Before his gubernatorial term, Huntington served as chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, where he upheld the controversial principle of judicial review. Two other judges who held this opinion were tried for impeachment, but Huntington, who had just been elected governor, was spared trial. This issue was central to Huntington’s administration, along with the possibility of war with Great Britain, the question of the location of Ohio’s capital, and Tiffin’s “Sweeping Resolution,” which terminated judges’ tenure.
