Description: The Spanish flag is red and yellow and shows the arms of Spain, which includes a castle, lion and a crown. The wool flag dates from around 1898. John W. Cook of St. Louis, Missouri, donated this Spanish flag in 1950. Cook, a corporal of Company E of the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, had a small garrison of Spanish troops surrender to him single-handedly while he was scouting during the Spanish-America War. The Spanish commander presented this flag to him. Cook, originally from Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio, kept the flag as a souvenir until he presented it to the Ohio Historical Society in 1950. View on Ohio Memory.
