Sesquicentennial Northwest Territory Expedition Collection
Description: "The Trek of the Northwest Pioneers," issued in celebration of the sesquicentennial for the Northwest Territory Expedition of 1788, provides a brief history of the original trek and settlement of the Northwest Territory and photographs of those participating in the recreation of the expedition. The original document has been partially used as a scrapbook, with newspaper clippings about the re-enactment of the expedition pasted within the pages. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Northwest Territory expedition, the Sesquicentennial Northwest Territory Expedition traveled in a caravan from Massachusetts to Ohio, aiming to recreate as precisely as possible the trek of the original settlers of the Northwest Territory. Beginning in December 1937, the caravan walked with an ox-drawn Conestoga wagon, aiming to reach the public with historical education through their reenactment. They traveled through the winter, reaching Marietta, Ohio, in April 1938, where they were received with great enthusiasm and a "pioneer parade." The expedition continued to travel throughout the Midwest for the next six months, spreading local history information. View on Ohio Memory.
