Description: A hand-written letter to Ada Young from Charles Noel “Tonton” Young from France, expressing his lack of writing supplies to so he can write home. Noel’s father, Col. Charles Young was the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. In 1918, after being forced into retirement, due to health concerns, he rode on horseback from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty. View on Ohio Memory.
