Description: This black settlement near Painesville in Lake County, Ohio, was known as Nigger's Hollow from 1840-1850. Eber D. Howe (b. 1798) was an agent of the Underground Railroad there. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history.
