Description: Lewis Hayden (1815-1889) was abducted from slavery by Calvin Fairbanks (1816-1898). He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, making his home at 66 Phillips Street. The front of this carte de visite is marked with the name Allen in the lower left corner. The image was collected by Ohio State University professor Wilbur H. Siebert (1866-1961). Siebert began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history. View on Ohio Memory.
