Judge Jacob Burnett Collection
Description: Portrait of Jacob Burnet, a lawyer and politician from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1770 and graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1791. After Burnet was admitted to the bar in 1796, he began to practice law in Cincinnati. He held a seat in the Ohio State house of representatives from 1814 to 1816 and served as a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1821 to 1828. Burnet resigned after he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William H. Harrison. He served until 1831 and was not a candidate for reelection. Additionally, Burnet was president of the Cincinnati College and the Medical College of Ohio and president of the Cincinnati branch of the United States Bank. He died in Cincinnati in 1853.
