Description: Mud gun in the cast house at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company's Campbell Works, East Youngstown (Campbell), Ohio. The mud gun, also know as a clay gun, closed the tapping hole when the casting was completed. Soft clay was placed in a capped opening on top of the gun. The body of the gun was a cylinder that narrowed into a nozzle at the exit end. The mud gun then plugged the hole with clay. Only certain types of clay were used in the gun. This mud gun is a double-barreled model, photographed ca. 1930-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
