Birdstone from Glacial Kame Culture   Save
Graham Brothers Collection
Description: Birdstone is made of green and black banded slate. The base is flat and narrow with nearly parallel sides and a rounded top. One end is shaped to form a stylized head and neck, possibly of a bird, with a short beak. The other end forms a tail that is triangular in shape. There is a drilled hole at either end of the base, one of which goes through to the base of the tail, the other through to the base of the neck. These holes have been broken. Additional holes have been drilled in the same places from side to side. Although the function of birdstones is unknown, they might have served as highly-decorative spearthrower weights. Item was possibly found in Geauga County or Cuyahoga County. View on Ohio Memory.
