Description: The Milan Canal was started in 1833 and the first canal boats were launched on July 4, 1838. No longer did the farmers have to haul their harvest over the sandy, wet prairie to Lake Erie. The canal was prosperous until the advent of the railroad in the 1850s. View on Ohio Memory.
