Ohio History Connection Archives/Library
Description: A small broadside, originally posted by John Lindley of Dayton, Ohio, dated August 1st, 1821. The advertisement reads "Ran away from the subscriber on Sunday last an apprentice to the carpenter business, named Stephen Crane." A physical description of Crane follows, with additional information plus an offer of "reasonable compensation" for any person who delivers Crane back to Lindley. Young Ohioans would often learn a craft or trade by apprenticing with a craftsman from whom they could learn the necessary skills of the job. In exchange for their contracted work, they would receive food, lodging and training. View on Ohio Memory.
