Ohio Governors' State of the State Addresses
Description: This eight page booklet contains the text of Governor William Bebb's message to the General Assembly on Jan. 5, 1849. Bebb (1802-1873), a Whig who served from 1846 to 1849, was the nineteenth governor of Ohio. He was a strong opponent of the Mexican War. In this message, Bebb announced that nearly all of his recommendations had been adopted by the General Assembly. Some of the issues he addressed during his administration included currency and revenue laws, education, state debt, monopolies, and penitentiary conditions. Bebb also advocated the repeal of the Black Laws, though this recommendation was not taken by the legislature. View on Ohio Memory.
