Description: A black and white postcard of the Grist and Saw Mill located at the Lincoln's New Salem State Park Historic Site in New Salem, Illinois. Lincoln’s New Salem is a reconstructed historic site preserving the village of New Salem from the 1830s, during which Abraham Lincoln resided for six years during his twenties. The Grist and Saw Mill was first owned by the co-founders of New Salem, John Camron and James Rutledge. The mill is located over the banks of the Sangamon River. The water from the river powered the grist mill to ground grains and corn into powder, and the saw mill used for cutting logs into long sheets. Abraham Lincoln first appeared in New Salem while traveling down the Sangamon River and his riverboat was entrapped by the mill’s dam. View on Ohio Memory.
