AV83 Abraham Lincoln Presidental Collection
Description: A black and white postcard of the National Lincoln Monument and Tomb at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. The tomb of Abraham Lincoln is most recognized by the white granite obelisk centered in the monument’s base. The structure was designed by Larkin G. Mead. Mead also designed the five bronze sculptures surrounding the obelisk. The standing bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln lies in front and in each corner of the obelisk are bronze statues of battle scenes from the Civil War depicting the cavalry, infantry, naval, and artillery forces. By the entrance of the tomb is a bronze sculpture of Lincoln’s head designed by Gutzon Borglum. The burial tomb is located under the monument. The tomb holds the remains of President Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, and their sons, Edward, William “Willie” and Thomas “Tad.” Their oldest son, Robert, is the only son not buried in the tomb.
