Description: This miner is using an electric hand drill made by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio. After drilling a series of holes in the coal seam face, explosive charges were placed in the holes and the face of the coal seam was "shot down". The loose coal could then be removed from the mine. This photograph was taken at the Detroit Mining Company, Gordon, West Virginia, 1936. View on Ohio Memory.
