Ohio Guide Photographs
Description: This is a photograph of a crane digging in a coal yard that is mostly likely a part of the M.A. Hanna Coal Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The M.A. Hanna Coal Company was founded by Daniel F. Rhodes and started as Rhodes & Company in the 1840s. In 1885, after Marcus Hanna, a national Republican political figure, married into the family it became Hanna Mining. The company expanded into iron ore mining around Lake Superior in the 1860s and the name changed to M.A. Hanna Company in 1922. View on Ohio Memory.
