Description: The Cleveland Museum of Art, a Neoclassical marble structure conceived in 1913 by a group of railroad and oil barons, was opened to the public on June 6, 1916. Land for the museum was donated by Jephtha H. Wade, namesake of nearby Wade Park. The bulk of its early collection was built by Horace Kelley, a local real-estate investor. In the postwar period, the CMA gained renown for its collection of East and South Asian art. A brutalist Marcel Breuer addition was completed in 1971. Complete reconstruction of the east and west wings, and renovation of the 1916 south wing and 1971 north wing by Rafael Vinoly is ongoing as of 2010. View on Ohio Memory.
