Ohio Guide Photographs
Description: Euclid Avenue, built on an Indian trail, was surveyed in 1816 and, as the main artery to New York, was known as the Buffalo Road until 1825. In the period following the Civil War, Cleveland's new elite built mansions along Euclid, giving the avenue the moniker "Millionaires' Row." In the twentieth century, Euclid grew as a commercial and traffic corridor; Cleveland's first families migrated first to University Circle, then to the Heights. By 1937, seven of the original 40 mansions of Millionaires' Row remained; by the 1960s, Euclid was a row of slums. Reverse reads: "Cleveland Streets, Jaywalker, Euclid near 18 Street, Credit line C. W. Ackerman" View on Ohio Memory.
