View of Tile Yard, where the concrete tiles are being made for the storm sewer being installed in Home Grounds.” Established in 1869, the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home was established by the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans' organization of Union soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. Originally, the institution was shelter to children who had lost their fathers during the American Civil War. Later, the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home was open to orphans of all military conflicts. Children at the institution received a traditional education, and the boys received military training. In 1901, Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home became the largest the institution of its kind in the world, with nine hundred residing children. The institution ceased operation in 1997.
