Description: James Birdseye McPherson was born near Clyde, Ohio, on November 14, 1828, and he died on July 22, 1864, serving his country in t e Union Army in the Civil War. He was the highest ranking officer to die in the Civil War. He was killed in the Battle of Atlanta. McPherson graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1853, the first in his class. He was buried in Clyde, Ohio in McPherson Cemetery, which was named after him. A monument to McPherson was established in East Atlanta at the location of his death. McPherson Avenue in Atlanta was named for him. View on Ohio Memory.
