Description: Aerial view of the town of Urbana, Ohio, in Champaign County, as it appeared in 1872. During the period, Urbana was growing in population, thanks to the completion of three railroads (visible at the top of the image) which helped link it to the rest of Ohio. At the center of the image can be seen Monument Square, located in downtown Urbana at the intersection of Scioto and Main Streets. Established in 1805, the town became the county seat with Champaign County's creation in 1805. Town founder William Ward named Urbana after the word urbanity. View on Ohio Memory.
