Description: This rectangular fragment of an animal bone has been cut and polished. The center portion has been cut out in preparation to make a fishhook. There are some mineral deposits on the bone, which is white and very pale brown in color. This piece comes from the Late Prehistoric Period. Several distinctive Late Prehistoric cultures are recognized in different parts of Ohio: Fort Ancient in southern and central Ohio; Sandusky in northwestern Ohio; Whittlesey in northeastern Ohio; and Monongehela in eastern Ohio. These Late Prehistoric groups fished, farmed, and collected wild plant foods throughout Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
